Lady Cynthia's Renaissance Wedding Gown

Pictured below are various views of an Elizabethan renaissance wedding gown. Each image can be clicked on in order to see a larger detailed photograph. The gown is made primarily of a bronze silk shot with blue. A blue silk jacquard shot with black was used for the sleeves and fore panel. The trim is a blue woven trim decoracted with spangles and glass beads. Couched on the sleeve cuffs and the hem of the underskirt are blue gems sewn with gold thread.

Lady Cynthia's Renaissance Gown Information

This gown was commissioned by Lady Cynthia for her wedding to The Black Fox. We worked on the gown over the course of several months, finding the materials and style that would make her the happiest. Specifically we wanted a blue that would match the tartan of The Black Fox as she chose to compliment him on his wedding day and wear his colours.

This Elizabethan renaissance gown pictured on this page is made of silk dupioni. The overskirt skirt is hand cartridge pleated lined in blue linen to give it some weight so that the drape of the fabric would be more period style. The hem was cut into a trained back.

The underskirt and sleeves are made of blue and black shot silk jacquard. The underskirt has a fore panel that is backed with canvas to keep those unsightly hoop lines from showing and the rest of the fabric is faked with blue linen. The sleeves are lined in blue linen and the cuffs have blue stones couched with gold silk. This same technique is also used at the hem of the underskirt.

One nice advantage in fitting this gown is that Lady Cynthia and The Black Fox flew in so we could get a perfect fit. The goofiest part was when Lady Cynthia and I decided to shorten the lenght of the farthingale with the bones still in place. We also had further fun, fabric shopping and drinking. A rather good time was had by all and The Black Fox got to work on his suntan.
