Silk Brocade Gown Renaissance Dress

This page shows information about our Couched silk renaissance gown. The bodice and overskirt are made of a silk brocade in black and bronze with hand couched trim. The underskirt and sleeves are made of cotton velvet, decorated with fresh water pearls, and are lined in linen. The Elizabethan gown is styled after gowns from the 1560s. such as the Helena Snakeborg portrait. The Unknown Lady, and the Colleccio portrait of Isabel De Valois.

The neckline and waist of the gown have velvet tabs. A piece of organza silk can be pullled through the loops at the neckline for a different look. This technique can be seen well illustrated in Jean Hunnisett's "Period Costume for Stage and Screen" where she discusses The Phoenix Gown worn by Queen Elizabeth in a portrait by Nicholas Hilliard.
