Italian Courtesan Gown Dress Details

The courtesan who ordered this gown is well known and adored among the Noblemen of Venice. A lovely songstress she is well known for her many skills. This gown was designed for a party given by the Doge who, expecting the lovely soprano, and her friend, the poet Veronica, has had the decorations done in reds and yellows as a beautiful backdrop for their abilities, both artistic and physical. Famous for her exceptional voice, the courtesan has requested this gown to best show her assets, as she has left the remainder of the evening to the handsome and wealthy man of her choice.

DETAILS:

BODICE

The outside of the bodice is made of a red silk dupioni shot with black and embroidered with silver thread in a geometric floral motif. It is lined in black cotton and interlined with stiff canvas. There are ten bones in the front , in order to achieve the correct look for the time period.

Bodice laces up the front and can be worn fully closed or opened up the front as the pictures show. There is no modesty panel as one may want to show some of the chemise for a more fetching look. However if you desire a modesty panel can be sewn in at no extra charge to accommodate changing sizes or a more modest look.

CHEMISE

This chemise was entirely hand sewn and is made of a saffron coloured antique silk chiffon sari. It is heavily embroidered with predominately silver thread and touches of red and blue. There is a peacock motif to the embroidery. The entire neck line both front and back is heavily trimmed with yellow beading. The sleeves are attached with more of the yellow beading and the arm cuff is made of woven silver tinsel. The chemise is designed as a partlet styled garment as one wants is to be short enough to stop at the waist for this design. It ties at the waist and can be adjusted to show more or less cleavage in the front than shown and can have a deeper vee in the back

OVERSKIRT

The overskirt is made of dupioni silk shot with black . It is hand cartridge pleated into the waist band using wide pleats for a lovely drape and is open in the front. The size is adjustable in the front with hook and eyes. It may add some further versatility to you wardrobe as it can be mixed and matched with other items and worn over a hoop skirt/farthingale. The overskirt is currently bustled in a shape that I like however that can be easily changed.

PANTS AND CODPIECE

The pants known as "slops" fit under the skirt. While showing a sexy leg is a good thing, a bit of covering can be enticing. These pants are a bit poufy and are the period version of "hot pants". Made of red silk dupioni the pants are lined in black silk. The waist band is made of no-roll elastic for a comfortable fit. The legs have cuffs and you have a choice of ribbon ties, elastic or drawstring.

Also included is a lovely female codpiece that ties onto the front of the pants with red ribbon. The front of the codpiece is made of the same fabric as the bodice and so it has the silver thread embroidery. The back is red dupioni. It is appropriately stuffed and while somewhat subtle, it is certain to catch the eye of a suitor

SIZING

The waist is good for a 26 to 28 inch waist but can be worn a bit more open to show the chemise. Chest measurement of aprox. 34" to a 38". Please contact me about any questions with this and I will see if further combinations will look good. There is also an optional modesty panel allows for additional sizing. Please ask any questions about correct sizing.

Waist on the overskirt and underskirt are adjustable in proportion to the bodice size.

Please remember to add room for any underpinnings such as a chemise or corset to the measurements.

Gowns are normally shipped unhemmed so that you can have it fit correctly. However due to the bustled effect it can be shipped hemmed. Also you have the option of changing the bustling design if you would prefer.

CARE

Gown must be dry cleaned and I like to scotch guard mine. (Makes Faire dust easier to shake out) Can be cleaned with Dryell.
