Brocade Renaissance Gown Details

The bodice and overskirt of this renaisance court gown are made from a black and non-metallic bee pattern brocade. Both the bodice and the overskirt are trimmed in black velvet. There are freshwater pearls sewn along the neckline.

The sleeves and fore-panel of the underskirt are of silver shot silk. Black grosgrain ribbon is sewn onto the sleeves in a woven diamond pattern. The Lady who acquired this gown has done a wonderful job of adding further embellishments of additional pearls and beads onto both the sleeves and bodice

This gown was inspired by a poem written by Thomas Lodge an English renaissnace poet in 1593

Love guards the roses of thy lips,
And flies about them like a bee;
If I approach he forward skips,
And if I kiss he stingeth me.
Love in thine eyes doth build his bower,
And sleeps within their pretty shine;
And if I look the boy will lour,
And from their orbs shoots shafts divine.
'Love guards the roses of thy lips'
